Important: Rules and case requirements vary. Confirm decisions with the child’s caseworker, licensing worker, attorney, court order, school contact, or clinical provider as applicable.

Start with the school-of-origin question

Ask the caseworker who is responsible for determining whether the child should remain in the current school and how transportation will be arranged. Do not independently withdraw or enroll the child unless you are authorized to do so.

Gather only what the school needs

Confirm the child’s legal name, grade, current school, education contacts, transportation plan, medications handled at school, accommodations, and who may receive information. Protect case details that are not educationally necessary.

Preserve activities and relationships

Ask about sports, clubs, music, trusted staff, and friendships. Continuing one familiar activity can reduce the amount of disruption a child experiences.

Create one communication record

Track dates, people contacted, documents requested, transportation decisions, and unresolved questions. Keep factual notes rather than interpretations.

Escalate barriers early

Contact the caseworker and the school’s foster-care point of contact when enrollment, records, transportation, or participation is delayed.
